It just occurred to me that since everyone can post events it might be a good idea to offer a little explanation on how to do it. This'll be short and sweet since it's really not that hard but skip it and come back later if you're not really going to be posting any events any time soon.

First thing is that anyone can post events. This is intentional. I would like for the Schedule page to be the most comprehensive listing of what's going on with anime clubs in Sydney. If you have an event that you think appeal to people, post it up. (Club specific event tags are in the works - neuralplex)

How to add your event to the events page calendar; there is two ways to do this, if you haven't got a thread for you event take the following steps:
1) Go to the events page,
2) Click the "post event" link at the bottom of the calendar,
3) Fill out the name, and date info for your event and the rest of the page as normal.
If you've already created a thread for your event, go to the page for your thread scroll to the bottom of the page and click "add to the calendar" and fill out the date info.

Events can be periodic. If your event happens every week, for example, then you need only post once and simply set up a recurrence. To set up a recurrence click "Advanced" on the "Calendar Event" line. This magically makes a couple more options appear. The "Recurrence" option is the length of the interval between events. The "End Date" is the last recurrence of the event. You can make an event repeat forever. You can also have repeating events that happen on specific times of a month (e.g. the 1st Sunday of every 2nd month).

Ask for help. If you have any questions about how to post events or any suggestions please let me know either via PM or email. I'll try to get on them as soon as possible.

OK, well that's about it. I think that covers the basics. Anything else just drop neuralplex a line.

Edited with updates to make the post more relevant to the new BBS system

Could someone please elaborate on what we mean by "appeal to people"?
I mean, technically _all_ events appeal to some people, otherwise they wouldn't be held - however, I feel that we may need to define which events would appeal to most here.

This concerned was raised by the KISS concert event. How many other people within the anime clubs here would actually be interested in going to this concert? I certainly don't.

So my question is this: are people allowed to organised/advertise events of virtually *any* nature, or should we restrict it to events that would primarily appeal to fans of anime and Australasian culture.

I personally feel that we should go for the latter. The reason for this is because this is an anime board. If people want to organise/post events in relation to non-anime related matters, then I don't feel that this board is an appropriate forum to place it. For instance, would I be justified in organising an outing to the next Sexpo, simply because I feel that there are a significant number of fans in the anime circle who are interested in sexuality?

What kind of events should be defined as being appropriate for being posted on this board?

I'd recommend the following:
1/ Directly related anime/manga events - e.g.: screenings, sales, cosplay, conventions, competitions, anime-karaoke etc.
2/ Japanese cultural events: e.g.: JapaRes Eat-outs, karaoke, festivals, Japanese movies etc.
3/ Non anime/Japanese related popular social activities: e.g.: Yumcha, soccer etc.

Note to any would-be flamers who are thinking about jumping on my back for attempting to indoctrinate other people with my opinions - I've only voicing my questions/opinions and recommending what I believe could be done. How the board administrators will actually deal with this issue is entirely up to them, as it always has and shall be.

I'm speaking personally at the moment and not on behalf of either the society or the moderators but the idea of creating a criteria of events that are "popular" is difficult and I'm not sure all that necessary. I apologise to xthomasfr for bringing his post up again but since Goki used it as an example I feel it's warranted to deal with it a bit more. I don't know that a KISS concert doesn't interest as large a number of people as a soccer day (or a trip to the aquarium). It seems dangerously arbitrary to say that some "popular" events are OK to post but others aren't. The forums here are used by SUAnime members, AnimeUNSW members as well as people who are members of neither society. This is intentional. The forums are supposed to be a place where people can come and meet together and becomes friends outside of an anime context. Events such as soccer/KISS concert/aquarium visit all help in this regard in my opinion. I don't see a problem with further events such as these (although please label them as "Miscellaneous").

I will bring up this issue with the SUAnime executive at our next meeting (Tuesday 5 pm at level 2 of Manning House for those that wish to attend!).

I fully agree with the notion of anime fans socialising outside of a strict anime context - e.g.: ice skating. Last year I tried to organise some martial arts workshops, but there was virtually no substantial interest.

The purpose of my question was primarily to investigate what limitations exist in regards to what kind of events we're allowed to organise/advertise on this board - if any such limitations indeed do exist.

Cheers.

First post updated with instructions on how to add an event to the calendar.
Just added the ability for repeating events.
This is a feature that's still being worked on.
Things to look forward to are:
  • Club specific event tags
  • Upcoming event notices on the front page and bbs index
Thanks for your patience! Smiley
