Having had a conversation with Annie before she joins her cult for their weekend activities, it has been decided that the History of the anime club will be stored here on a more permanent basis. This story will also be added to as more info comes to light. Anyone can add their own bits and pieces of history, provided it was epic enough.
I'll try and manage it in my spare time. Annie has also proposed that anyone willing can photoshop themselves or others into characters that would fit into this story.
A Brief Introduction:The origins of the anime club began in the dawn of time, in what became known as "the Age of Icchan". This age is only known by the oldest of anime club members, and even by them it is considered a time of myth. This was the Age of the Foundation of anime@uts. This was a time when the fabled Internet was still open and free. This was a time of mighty heroes who would travel with backpacks full of VHS tapes, of epic journeys between UNSW, Usyd and UTS and of battles with the beasts of bureaucracy and copyright. This was a golden age for the anime club.
This age graduated into legend with the passing of Icchan, making way for the second generation, heralding "the Age of Mazkra". This generation was heavily dominated by the engineering order, especially after the "social" vs "hardcore" wars. This age also saw the rise of the anime club as a powerhouse in the union club pantheon, becoming the third most popular club behind SECSME and CREDO. This marked a second silver age for the club.
However, there was a steady decline for the club nearing the end of this generation, marked by the graduation of core members, particularly Binga, who was then known as the power behind the throne. There was also loss of the famed union third place to EGG, a club which was heavily meshed with anime@uts. This led to claims that EGG was a spawned progeny of anime@uts, a claim vehemetly denied by EGG. Minor border skirmishes began between the two clubs and bad diplomatic relations have ensued until only recently.
This age passed with the graduation of Mazkra, and "the Age of Annie" began. The new age began with a revolution, with the abolishment of the old engineering guard, and the election of a brand new high council. This age also saw the inclusion of learned orders that had long been absent from the anime club, orders such as science and law. The Dark Mistress Annie, forged ahead with many new policies, including the integration of anime@uts with the rest of the sydney anime clubs. This policy has borne fruit recently, with the building of a communal communications hub, the
www.animesydney.org site, and the organization of the first inter-club cruise.
The club is now going strong, and while numerically it lacks the success of prior ages, the successful interaction with other clubs inside and outside of UTS combined with the success of many events held by the club, shows that anime@uts has matured and will enjoy a bright and prosperous rule under the velvet fist of Annie, Mistress of anime.
[Archivist note: Comment dated early third age]Chapter 1: Journey to the South EastThe Grandfather of anime@uts, Icchan, Started his journey in the time of legends, circa 2001, as a lowly undergraduate of UTS. He toiled day and night, seeking to achieve that most elusive of titles, the bachelors degree. However, within his heart burned another passion, one that would make him a hero to us all. He secretly longed for the treasure of anime, an art long lost in the campuses of UTS.
One uneventful day, as Icchan toiled away in the lecture rooms, he heard from a passing postgraduate of an anime club in the fabled lands of UNSW. This revelation struck him with the force of a holy decree.
He immediately began preparations for the journey to the south east, a journey he knew he was destined to make. He gave up his studies and began purchasing supplies and equipment. He watched the stars and the flight of birds, looking for omens of the trip ahead. When all was ready, he made his sacrifices to the gods and finally began his journey to the south east, his quest into the promised lands.
Along the way he faced many arduous tasks and villianous foes. One challenge of renown he faced was the stop of a thousand shifting buses. With nothing but a flimsy scroll timetable and his wit, Icchan defeated this challenge.
The exact nature of the rest of challenges would fill an entire volume, but suffice to say that Icchan attempted all of them without the slightest hesitation. At the end of each he would emerge, not unscathed, but triumphant.
The true happenings of what occurred when Icchan reached the holy lands of UNSW are lost to the sands of time. Icchan himself never spoke of the things he must have seen, but common belief is that he gained audience with an avatar of anime. From this celestial being he learned of the secrets of anime, of the holy tomes of IRC and even glimpses into the future, to a time of bittorrent and animesuki.
Upon his return to UTS, Icchan was a changed man. Hardened by his travels, and wise beyond his years, He set about creating a school to honor the art of anime. This he named anime@uts and here he trained his first disciples in the lost arts. He also enforced one iron rule, "thou shalt no distro what is licensed".
Icchan then went on to rule over the club, and though many disciples to the art of anime came, Icchan never flinched from doing any duty himself. His eventual passing from UTS was mourned by many, particulary as the more cynical believe he left without sharing all he gained at UNSW. But he did pass on to legend, joining the pantheon and taking on the portfolio of technobanker of the gods.
Chapter 2: Love and WarIn the beginning of the second age, circa 2003, when the legends of the first age had passed, the people of anime@uts discovered kindred spirits in the people of the anime club of Usyd. A joint celebration was organised on the lands of anime@uts. There was much dancing, feasting and merriment all round.
While this celebration ensured, two souls found each other behind the screening of escaflowne. Iria the Fair and Sasuke of the order of the Pink Ribbon were they. But before their pre-destined love could blossom, trouble stirred.
The celebrations became tinged with envy, as the Usyd began to condescend over their younger anime@uts brethren. The future dark mistress, Annie, then a young squire of the Usyd club, began the exchanges with a misspoken challenge. Words were said that perhaps should not have been spoken and the celebration wilted in the fires of conflict. Most violent of the exchanges was between Sasuke and Winter, then a councillor of anime@uts.
It was only with an uneasy truce that the two sides parted. However, no sooner had the two sides reached their respective campuses that plans for war were drawn. The War of the Flame had begun.
The conflict began with minor raids by both sides into each others territory. Even then, the two heroes, Iria and Sasuke, were always at the forefront of the battles. Many a time the two met on the fields of Eclectical and Suanime, but never was there a decisive victory by one over the other. Respect developed between the two, even as they clashed most fiercely.
On the diplomatic front, the exchanges grew fierce, as claim and counter claim roared over the negotiation table. When not leading his men, Sasuke would always be in verbal combat with Councillor Winter.
The War dragged on for many months, draining both clubs of resources and people. The two sides were too evenly matched, and no advantaged could be gained by one over the other. Honorable Sasuke, wishing to end the conflict for the good of all, had offered generous terms of peace to Winter. Winter however, blinded by his pride, denounced the offer nothing more than a trick.
Thus the conflict reached a defining moment, as both sides pitted their all in a maelstrom of fire. Two massive hosts were formed, facing each other across the great road Austnet. Amongst this all was Sasuke who, not wishing to see the suffering extend, challenged the anime@uts host to decide the battle by single combat.
When a lone rider came from the anime@uts host, it was Sasuke himself who rode to meet them. The battle between the two was a clash of titans, but the two were too evenly matched. Blow after blow was exchanged, and the two soon became tired. It was the champion of anime@uts who faltered first, as Sasuke struck his opponent a powerful blow.
The anime@uts champion's helm flew through the air, and there was the silence of two massive hosts holding their collective breaths. As Sasuke prepared to strike his final blow, he saw his opponent was none other than Iria the Fair. Suddenly, something stirred in Sid's heart and he found that he could not bring himself to strike.
As he offered to her his hand, he saw that her eyes had welled with tears, as if she had been crying the entire battle. Not sure of what to say, both warriors simply parted, each returning to their bewildered sides.
The two warriors proceed to use their influence to form a cease fire and eventually a peace between the two sides, but this was no fairy tale ending. There were still grievances to be redressed, matters to be settled. But as two worked together to bring peace, the love that had sparked on that fire scarred ground bloomed into a romance that would scorch the pages of history.
After the war Sasuke was assigned a role as diplomat to anime@uts, through all knew that this was a cover for his liaisons with Iria. However, their relationship did lead to the period after the War of the Flame becoming remembered as an unparalled period of peace and cooperation between Usyd and anime@uts. Perhaps everybody likes a good love story.
Chapter 3: Legend of the SniperbladeOnce, nearing the end of the 2nd age, circa 2004, there walked amongst us a man by the name of Sniperblade. Strong of arm was he, and quick of blade, a true disciple of the way of the matrix. Everywhere he would walk, in his dark trenchcoat, dispensing his brand of justice with shuriken and dagger.
This was a time of upheaval, a time that needed heroes such as he. For the anime@uts club was failing, its members falling to the oncoming plague of tests and examinations. Sniperblade came as a conquering hero amongst the fold, bring with him fresh reinforcements to anime@uts' ailing cause.
But Sniperblade's soul was tainted, for he harbored a deep ambition and an even deeper lust. All of the reinforcements he brought claimed to swear allegiance to anime@uts. However, in a far darker ceremony, they swore true allegiance to a new rising power. A power that had forsaken the art of anime, a power that choose to control the events of the screen with "console" and "mice".
A power that became known as EGG.
As Sniperblade infiltrated the ranks of anime@uts, he slowly gained more and more converts to his cause. with the allure of the Xbox and PS2, he slowly built up a core of fanatics within the members of anime@uts and EGG.
But even this was not enough for him, for he had yet another ulterior motive in joining anime@uts. The ranks of EGG were barren, filled with only men. For there is a dark curse on EGG that prevents women from becoming true members. Sniperblade was hunting, hunting for a bride that would quench his lust.
At night he would stalk the roads of Austnet, driven mad by his desires. He would ambush many a hapless victim, ravishing them with his demonic urges. In this unnatural state he could barely discern woman from man. It is claimed that even Chancellor Duy befell to such an attack, though he himself would never speak of this matter.
As his dark secrets came to light, Sniperblade became desperate. He drew up plans for a inter-club event between EGG and anime@uts. A "joint-screening LAN". There, with the aid of his fanatics, he could swoop and claim lordship of both clubs. But his luck failed him at this critical junction. Bad timing and simple neglect meant that nary a soul turned up to the event.
His plans unravelling and his nature revealed, Sniperblade put his one last mad plan into action. He would begin a war between EGG and anime@uts, leaving no-one in power and allowing him to pick up the pieces. Many were fooled by his intrigues, and hostilities did begin between the two clubs.
But at this darkest of times, a heroine emerged. Kraken was her name, through we now know her as St Kraken, patron saint of innocent women. Kraken confronted Sniperblade, and using what powers she had, turned his lust against him to seal him away. Her power, however, required a focal person, someone that would have to remain sealed with Sniperblade. Not wishing the fate on anyone else, she used herself as the focus, a sacrifice to save us all. Even today, women show their respects to Kraken with the prayer "She took one for the team".
Sniperblade's influence was not completely removed with his disappearance from the UTS campus. Minor skirmishing between EGG and anime@uts persisted up until the present day, and it was only recent negotiations between Optimus, High Pwnerer and Annie, Mistress of Anime that have brought events to a satisfactory conclusion.
This should serve as a warning to us all, not to allow our loins to guide our actions.
Chapter 4: Selphie, Warrior QueenThe early reign of Mazkra the High was renowned as an age of peace and prosperity. There were however, times of conflict during this period, one instance of particular note being the invasion of anime@uts by Selphie the Untamable.
Selphie was a warrior queen from the far north, from the mythical lands of Cathay. Through her stature was small, she was fierce, giving no quarter and expecting none in return. Experienced was she in the arts of war, a formidable foe that few could face.
She came like a spectre in the night to the campuses of UTS, seeking a place in the epic ballads of her homelands. Moving with a catlike grace amongst her prey, she sought weaknesses, probed defences. Her strikes were swift and deadly, leaving no time for feints, parries or dodges.
It was at an anime@uts council meeting that Selphie attacked, and many fell before her onslaught. Her weapons, a large bludgeon fashioned from a laptop bag and a lethal abacus, maimed many. It was Warchief Hodlum who finally managed to best her, ignoring her strikes to get within her guard, and finally subduing her.
Selphie was bound and almost exiled from anime@uts, when Marcel the Silent saw past the savage exterior to the noble spirit that resided within her. She was allowed residence within the confines of the anime club and all the luxuries of civilization extended to her.
Slowly the advanced culture began to wear away at her primal self. She began watching anime, soon developing a love for it far greater than for her old pursuits of gladiatorial combat. She began learning of the classics, of Akira and Ghost in the Shell, of Porco Rosso and Spirited Away. Finally, as a symbol of the release of her old ways, she discarded her weapons and clothes for the traditional garb of anime, Cosplay.
However, Selphie was still a proud warrior woman. She may have abandoned her old ways for that of anime, but in doing so, she had simply changed her passions from one cause to another.
Selphie became an evangelist for anime, and soon spread the holy writ all over the campuses of UTS. But even this was not enough to satisfy her. Once she believe UTS to be suitably indoctrinated, she donned her old armor and weapons. Carrying the message of anime in her heart, Selphie left the club to spread the word of anime to the far flung reaches of the world.
Selphie was remembered fondly by many at anime@uts. As such, when she did not return from her journey, many mourned for her. She was honored with a place in the hall of legends, immortalized for all to remember as a heroine of the second age.
It was with great amazement that many greeted Selphie's return in the third age. She had travelled the world, and had become renowned in far off places that we could only dream of.
Having become wise in the intervening time, she longer wielded her weapons with her uncontrolled ferocity. Through her spirit had cooled, it was as the tempering of a blade. In times of need, Selphie could still wax wrathful, fighting with all the rage of an earlier age.
As a matter of course, Selphie was elected to a position of high standing in the anime@uts council. From her post of overseer, she maintains a hawk-like eye on the membership of anime@uts, keeping the peace and ensuring the taxes are paid. It is a testament to her efforts that the anime@uts ledgers have never shown delinquencies or an unpaid debt.
Chapter 5: The Three StoogesBy Blay
Butchered and remade by Hodlum
Sometime during the second year of Annie's reign, a mysterious group appeared at the Anime@UTS Weekly Screenings. Comprising of a party of three, these mysterious strangers were often seen at the back of the screening room, feasting on an assortment of foodstuffs. All that was know about them then was that they would chant the ancient hyms of School Rumble.
Most of the member of anime@uts saw them as nothing more than beggars or petty thieves, paying them no heed. But as others sat ignorantly watching their anime, the three watched them... and plotted. For they saw in anime@uts an opportunity ripe for the picking, if only you had the will to do so.
During the day, when most members were busy working in lecture halls and tutorial rooms, the three mounted a lightning raid of the communal hub of all the clubs. Pillaging and looting with abandon, they left many members reeling with their techniques of flamefu and spamjitsu.
Escaping with their loot and deftly avoiding the authorities, The three soon acquired quite a reputation. The names of Blay, EwicJei and Spastic, Bandit Kings, were found on wanted posters all over the land. But it was Baron 'Shifty' Mechjman who christened them by the name they would be forever known as, "The Three Stooges".
Whilst to many it may seem that they are a curse, they have brought some much needed excitement to the campuses of anime@uts. Their gambling dens have become hubs of excitement amongst the over worked members, and their most recent exploits are hot topics amongst the many gossips on the land.
Though the three have stopped much of their criminal activities on the lands of UTS, they continue to raid the hubs of other clubs. This has earned them a almost heroic reputation in the eyes of many. Even the authorities have turned a blind eye to many of their less nefarious activities.
The three have always stuck together and it was once remarked by Warchief Hodlum that "If you can only see two of them, then the third ones behind you". It is hoped that some day the three will mend their ways, but whatever they do, there is no doubt that their presence at the club will be a source of excitement for ages to come.
