Macq's changing the department of asian languages to department of asian studies. this'll lead to several changes.

but, more importantly, Dr Mio is looking for volunteers to help macq make a website on manga/anime. Thing is, apparantly, anime and manga have been added to hsc english curriculum, as well the japanese curriculum. but teachers have nfi what its about. so yeah, mio wants to build a website to help em.

So far, its still in conceptual stages, but yeah, expressions of interest can be sent via email to Dr Mio Bryce.
mio.bryce@mq.edu.au

just let her know that she can contact you if and when she starts with the project.
juts to be clear, I have no idea if she needs people who know about website development, or if she needs people to write articles, or perhaps people to moderate a forum. I have really no idea. But if you have time, and are willing to help, just let her know Cheesy

she also needs people to help with research for phd projects

Wow, anime in the HSC. That's pretty neat. Would have been a hoot if it was around when I was doing the HSC XD I remember doing an English speech in Year 11 on Nadesico, but hardly anyone understood what I was going on about Tongue

Maybe my expertise may be of use here *points to D and HD for JPN123 and JPN223* Wink

I just had an evil thought of James Ruse people cramming this one LOL

OK guys, I emailed Mio, and managed to get a more detailed design brief:

Quote
This project aims at establishing a holistic website - Manga/Anime
Core@MQ(?), the innovative hub of manga/anime research and function as
an interface between interested groups and rich resources, e.g., a large
scaled databank of academic resources and teaching materials. The need
of the resources is particularly pressing as manga/anime is now part of
school curriculum, in spite of little available support for teachers who
are unfamiliar with manga/anime texts. This project has been derived
from the applicant’s development of four manga units at Macquarie
University and the website will be beneficial to bestow a unique
identify to MQ Japanese Studies.

What say you all? Anyone else want in?

I may not have the technical knowledge that they require but I'm happy to help with the website and or forum.

I'm curious what she wants, and she has always been a great support to AnimeMQ.

I'm happy to help, tho I still wonder what does she needs Smiley

Nothing concrete in terms of site implementation has come up yet Darius. We are still getting ideas together on what to put onto the site that will best help teachers, since anime is something rather unconventional to teach on, compared to things like Shakespeare.

Ben, you can still help Mio by contributing ideas, which are more important at the moment. You did the HSC only last year, and if anything, you'd be in a good position to comment on what gets assessed these days, and what kinds of things are important in the English subject.

New information just came to me. Someone in the know told me that Mio is looking for people who can write essays about anime and how it represents identity (this stuff is covered in JPN223, but I'm sure Mio can get you up to speed on what she is looking for). The more articles that can be published, the more recognition we can gather, and with that, possibly more funding for this project Smiley

While there are already a few people who are willing to write stuff (eg. we have a couple of PHD students on hand), I guess it could be something to think about if you are good with the English language and have spare time during the summer break. Articles to use for reference material will be gathered shortly, and the essays are preferably to be like 3000+ words long.

What still puzzles me however is while the project is about making a site that is a hub for getting anime fans to connect with academics and teachers to further anime as an academic pursuit, I have no idea how that is going to work, and how to keep idiots like idle 4channers from ruining the entire experience.

In any case, if you are interested, email Mio at Mio.Bryce@humn.mq.edu.au

Simple academic is the antithesis of 4-chan and its 14 year old anonymous swarm.

Cheesy I used The End of Evangelion in the English HSC in 2003, it was acceptable but a bit rare to use anime back then, I was one of the few people that did.

I only got 90 in English though in HSC :X

I can prolly knock up an essay on anime and identity after my exams are over use psych references lol.

Hey hey~ Do you wanna work together on an Evangelion-search for identity, love, and integrity essay with me? I've watched through EVA for god knows how many times...so I'm pretty confident about providing all the theories and implications and whatever...but I suck at writing OH NOES!...so maybe if we work together we'll get a really uberly good Evangelion essay~  Lips Sealed
