Oh! James was only around in 2004 IIRC.
It's possible that he was working off of a scanlated copy.
See when he wrote that review, he was working on an essay for one of his Japanese subjects, in which he compared the fan translation and official translation.
Fan translations can sometimes stick in your mind, but they are not always the most accurate. It's sort of like Tessaiga and Tetsuaiga with Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru vs Sesshomaru. I work with the fantranslation best, because that was what I was first introduced to.
(I actually became administrator of an Inuyasha board three months before I touched the manga (which I couldn't really get into, and six before I saw the anime.) .
