I guess in the minds of many people (me being one of them before), it was somewhat 'cool' to say that you watched anime with subs and that listening to dubs somehow lost effect whenever characters had mannerisms and when there were heaps of jokes that would get lost in translation.
its not so much that it's *in the minds of many people* that by posting this we think we're like uber cool or some bullshit (something you're totally forcing into the discussion; there's no need to try and make people's opinions inferior if they dont match your own 1:1).... its more the fact... dubs just suck when compared to the effort/etc put in by the original VAs.

...and it just sounds 'cool' to listen to.
"omg guess what guize... i just started watching teh awesome animez with.... omg u'll never guess what.... the original japanese audio and subtitles..."
*gasps of awe from those listening*
*whispers in the background* "who is that guy, he's so cool"

By reading the subs, you just match the general meaning to how its delivered
well.... uh yeh..... isnt that how subtitles work...? its a way for those who dont/cant understand the original language the production was made to understand what's going on without lessening the quality due to poor dubbing.

If you do end up understanding jap and watch it, then you'll realise that there are differences between the two, and subs don't always get it right.
holy shit no way!? fansubbers don't always get it right!?!?!? *smacks self in the head*  ....fucking revelation!!!!!!

I just blindly believed that dubs would sound 'funny' in a sense, when compared to its 'source' material
im sure a lot of the opinions about dubs sucking come from those that have actually tried them, rather than "just blindly believing".
guess what.....? the dubs DO sound funny when compared to the SOURCE material.   ....no need for apostrophes on the word "source" .... it is the source... the japanese audio is the original, and therefore the source. wtf.

gah whatever, i've had enough looking through your high and mighty post. "oh when u understand jap then u'll be so much better" ... "oh its ok, u dont know what ur talking about, you dont *actually* understand what's going on" ... "i was at a transition stage.... i just blindly believed this and that... but im out of that phase now, im soooo much fucking better"

i dont know too much about whats going on with the raw language in anime.... i dont understand japanese by any means. but i think i can formulate my own opinion without you spraying your bullshit, and say that the dubs i have seen suck balls (except for cowboy bebop.... which is a shame.... decent dubs on a shit anime).

*goes and sucks off whoever bans me for this post to let me back on the forums*

If you do end up understanding jap and watch it, then you'll realise that there are differences between the two, and subs don't always get it right. And you'll also be able to critique the Jap audio as well, since its not always perfect. With DBZ, again, Goku's japanese is so out there that its quite funny just to listen to, and adds towards the character's personality. Overall, I do prefer Jap over dub, partially because i can understand it, but regardless, during the transition stage, I just blindly believed that dubs would sound 'funny' in a sense, when compared to its 'source' material. Added to the mystery of things. Not that i hate dubs, its all good to watch, and i get to laugh at it.

That's very true.

I think I've sort of developed a prejudice against dubs because most of them sound awful - like both the voice actors and the people who cast them really weren't trying at all. That said, I have encountered a couple of series that do have excellent dubs that in fact prefer over the Japanese audio (Cowboy Bebop and Trigun to name two).

That said, it depends a whole lot on the genre you're watching. It certainly gets more difficult when Japanese national and cultural concepts get mixed in - I think this is why more 'neutral' series, like the above mentioned two lend themselves well to dubs. As people have mentioned previously in this thread, English does not well convey things like the various Japanese dialects (people complain about Kansai-ben in particular) and it also becomes difficult to translate when the author/creator of an anime/manga/game or other work wants to be ambiguous (due to the Japanese grammatical syntax and the fact that the subject can also often be omitted)....this and the fact that some things just sound downright weird in English

I think the crunch point for a lot of series is, as Ben mentioned, the characters' voices and how it adds to their personality - this is what allows a lot of Japanese voice actors/actresses to reach celebrity status, start singing careers and what have you - and as any Akiba-kei will tell you, is also a critical component of a character's moe appeal (which I guess also applies equally for whatever the equivalent in male characters is)

If i offended anyone with my post then i apologise. Didn't mean to sound off as being high and mighty, though i guess that happens when i post <.< Its not like i was saying i was better than others by understanding jap, my level is still complete crap. Just wanted to note that you get to enjoy something that is watched if you understand the language. And I never meant to say that all dubs were crap. I still enjoy some of them as well. Whether they're funny or they're genuinely good, I'll still watch. Oh, and the use of quotations is a habit that i like to do, regardless of whether its correct or not.

Overall, it really does become a matter of opinion whether you like dub or not. My point just happened to be the way i saw things, and another interpretation as to why people liked dubs/subs or not.

Hey Schmole
In fuzzyorochi's defence it really is sad when people have to devolve into apes and use language like that? All I did was present a legitimate point of view which Im sure many people share, Im not anti sub Im not anti dub. To think that people would turn into animals just to present an ad hominem and pathetic nonsensical attack is really poor on this forum. I don't have the power to ban anyone but I would if I could.

=O i thought cowboy was excellent! and yes i agree i do think the dubs are decent in comparison to the other stuff ive seen

i agree with the whole 'lost in translation' as the way sentence structure for english vs. japanese is totally different to begin with, which is reasonable but already obvious to be pointed out, and then theres the whole cultural colloquialisms and mannerisms (as fuzzy stated) etc. and the whole shebang... however it doesnt necessarily mean its a bad thing as most things would be covered in the scene so that it can be translated. lets take this case for instance: hentai dubs, some people like it, some people find it amusing, and some people dont really care at all lol

Well to start off with your 'defence', your second sentence is kinda irrelevant. I wasn't referring to you or your beliefs at all during my previous post.
As for the 'ad hominem' (yes, i did have to look it up, sue me Tongue), I do believe the issue was addressed within my personal attacks, taking into account my comparison of dubs to the original VA's work and the issue of and surrounding the original audio's language and subsequently the subtitles that offer a translation to that audio.

The attack was nonsensical though, yes i'll give you that. Was fun too Cheesy As for whether its poor on this forum or not, i'll have to leave in limbo. Considering a lot of the content-lacking posts throughout the various sections of the forums when compared to say ARC, I'd say I was acting around the same level of this forum (albeit a tad lower, but that was my intention).

As for devolving into apes, and subsequently using language... well good sir, I got a laugh out of that. Thank you very much so.
Ahhhh I got a fun reply Smiley what a wonderful note to go to bed on.

(as for the banning.... lololololololololol more laughs. ur funny.)

edit: to the fuzz... sorry xP was just kinda bored
