Border Crossings: Intersections Between Japanese Popular Culture and Fandom

Join our panellists, Roland Kelts (author of Japanamerica), Professor Susan Napier, Dean Prenc (Madman) and Ms Amanda Setiadi (Animania), for a discussion on the driving forces behind the popularity of Japanese anime and manga from the various perspectives of consumption, distribution and scholarly analysis, addressing issues such as fan participation through fanzines and ‘fansubbing’ of new titles into English; the historical ‘domestication’ of Japanese culture into the West in contrast to the recent trend towards authenticity; and the strategic use of pop culture as a ‘soft power’ in Japan’s relationships abroad.

Panel discussion moderated by Dr Rebecca Suter (University of Sydney), followed by audience Q&A.

Admission is free, bookings are essential.

I'm interested, but I don't know if I'll be free just yet.
