This article states pretty much the exact same understanding I have of the entire, manga doujinshi market in Japan.
I think I read a similar article before somewhere, or heard of it b4 but that pretty much the gist of it.

Shocked!!!

I know there's a lot of talk about dubbing such as 4Kids with shows like One Piece and Pokemon that cause episodes to be banned or edited to be more Americanised such as replacing onigiri with sandwiches or removing any kinds of violence.

But this is outrageous!!! Art is another form of media like books, newspapers and other reading materials. Its like banning a book to be sold because of its contents.

Hmm...its not really a censorship issue, but rather a copyright issue. Its not like they're banning fanart because its obscene (though there is some fairly obscene fanart out there, just ask Eve :p), but rather because its infringing on a company's property.

lol "some" is an understatement. but then again its objective on how obscene it is b4 its actually classified obscene.
The main problem the US companies have with fanart is that the artists are "technically" earning money from images which the companies  hold the licence to, therefore, the fan artists are technically stealing the company's sales revenue. which is to me, a whole load of bs.

So screw the legal system.

I wonder if you could argue that fanart (in some forms) could be a parody or a satire of the anime/manga, and therefore somewhat legal?

For example, alot of the anime clubs make badges that kind of satirise a series (alot of JAUWS's badges and stickers come to mind). I wonder if the chibi-fication of serious characters (like say Death Note) could classify as a parody/satire. Or, just for our yaoi-hime, could you argue that Lelouch/Suzaku yaoi is a satire of their seemingly gay friendship?

I think that's one of the reasons why some people turn a blind eye to it.

I heard JAUWS's Ben say that the voice actor of Vegeta bought a few of his Namek bumper stickers or something along those lines when he went to Supanova. As long as people aren't making an insane amount of profit, then generally people don't really take notice of it.

That would suggest that inevitably, sometime in the future, paladins of yaoi (and to a lesser extent, other sexually deviant reinterpretations of popular characters OH NOES!) will be leading the charge against companies seeking litigation against fans for copyright abuse.

tbh tho, sounds like a huge precaution rather than companies going RIAA on people.
