i have tried the bavarian bier cafe at manly wharf, its pretty awesome, but it is all the way up at manly... theres one in the city though, good schnitzel there
Do you mean the one along York St, that's a few blocks away from QVB? I went there and got free schnapps (bday at the time). Schnapps was good, till i puked it out

...I'm not good with alcohol, full stop.
Anyway IMO Lowenbrau is better, bigger proportions of food and not as expensive as Bavarian Bier Cafe. It's got a better atmosphere as well.
There's also a nice German/Bavarian restaurant at Broadway called Essen. They have mains that are on special that are about $20 ($19.50-$22, most mains cost about $25 and up if memory serves me right) everyday. And the platters are really big too at a reasonable price if you split it within a group of 6-7

(I think I paid around $15-$18, cause I paid around $40 for both me and my friend who owes me money, and extra desserts) Desserts are so so soooooo goood *droools* OMG... Creme Brulee is to die for~!

(back on topic) You also get free schnapps too. But I think that came with some sort of platter deal (I can't remember T^T)
